About Dr. Heather Smith
After completing my Bachelors degree in Human Development at California State University San Marcos, I earned my Masters of Science and Doctorate degrees in counseling psychology from Colorado State University. I am a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Colorado. I have spent fifteen years as a psychotherapist, crisis counselor, academic advisor and career counselor in college counseling centers, community mental health agencies and private practice.
I have taught undergraduate and graduate classes at Front Range Community College and Colorado State University. I am a Gottman Educator for the Seven Principles and Bringing Baby Home programs. I am also one of a small number of therapists in the world trained in Discernment Counseling, a new approach to helping couples look at their options before making a final decision about divorce, and TEAM therapy, a highly effective new form of cognitive-behavioral therapy.
I am passionate about using scientific research to inform clinical practice. I am encouraged by the vast research literature documenting the effectiveness of psychotherapy, and am inspired by seeing the proof of this firsthand as I watch my clients courageously grow, change, and improve their lives. I am knowledgeable about what research has shown to be the key ingredients of effective psychotherapy, about which qualities of the therapist, therapy approach, client-therapist relationship, and client promote the best possible outcome. I continually strive to enhance my knowledge and skills to become the best therapist I can possibly be, and will help you tap into your growth potential so that you too can become your best version of yourself.
